The History of Harmaina

The traditional district of Harmaina, in the town of Amfissa, is deeply connected to crafts of great symbolic heritage, having played a significant role in the region’s history and culture. The leather-processing workshops—known as Tabákika and, to younger generations, simply as tanneries—have long been gathered in this very area.

Dodwell and the Ancient Craft

What remains uncertain is the exact point in time when the craft first began to be practiced in Harmaina. The only documented reference comes from the British archaeologist and traveler Dodwell, who dates the art of leather processing in the area to well before 1600.
“They were considered worthy enough to be served at the table of the Sultans.”
“The colored leathers produced here, especially the yellow ‘sahtian’ skins, were highly valued and sought after throughout all of Greece.”

The Miracle of Water

The Italian painter Simone Pomardi, who visited Greece in 1805–1806, writes about the water of the spring:
“Yet this divine gift would have turned into a curse had our friends from Harmaina not found a remarkable and enviable way to manage this water. And so, before the 17th century, they built a beautiful structure—the Toulasidi.”
“From the above, it becomes evident that this area once flourished professionally, socially, and economically.”

The Tanners’ Guild

All the tanners of the town spent most of their day in this district. They had formed a Guild and celebrated each year on May 2nd together with the chapel of Saint Athanasios.

The Spirit of Harmaina

A Story of Love and Tragedy

The legend tells the haunting story of a devoted tanner who, deeply in love with a beautiful young woman, set off on long journeys to sell his leather and earn the rings for their engagement.

During his absence, however, a heartbreaking tragedy struck — his beloved was killed by lightning.

Overwhelmed with grief, the tanner took his own life and became the Spirit of Harmaina, forever haunting the old spring of the neighborhood.

A unique and captivating tradition comes to life every year on the last Saturday of Carnival.

The 70 Workshops

At the height of Harmaina’s prosperity, around 70 tannery workshops were in operation. The buildings were inseparably connected to the landscape, the climate, and the functional needs of the craft.

The ground floor formed a solid, enclosed structure with minimal openings. This is where the first — and most demanding — stages of hide processing took place.

The tanner’s profession was exhausting, requiring long hours and painstaking effort before the final product could emerge.
